Village News 15th June 2022

• What a memorable Jubilee weekend we had in Alrewas. Nick Collins arranged a spectacular lighting of the ‘beacon’ and firework display on Alrewas Island on the Thursday to begin the celebrations. Alrewas Arts Festival volunteers worked hard to lay on a wonderful day of activities and music on the Island on the Friday, there was a street market at the British Legion on Saturday as well as a delicious array of Jubilee cakes at the Cricket Club’s Bake Off. Then on Sunday, the villagers really demonstrated their community spirit. In pouring rain over 50 residents, the Jubilee Choir and the Ryknild Rabble turned up on Main Street at 7am to be filmed for the BBC Breakfast Show. And the rain cleared for the Big Jubilee Lunch which filled Main Street as well as many other small pockets of Alrewas where residents joined to celebrate together

And finally - the amazing Jubilee Choir, who performed five times over the weekend. If you missed them you can hear them here with some wonderful footage filmed by the Alrewas Archives team Click here to view on YouTube

• Open Gardens Weekend returns after a two year break on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July. There is a wide selection of venues open between 12 noon and 5pm each day, 23 in all, and a programme of supporting events. The Ryknild Rabble and Fiddle Folk will be performing at the Vicarage where delicious afternoon teas will be served.  The Hedgehog and Bird Rescue group from Tamworth will be on hand with a display and advice as well as the Woodland Trust. For the first time the Big Red Bike team will be offering rides around the village (and between gardens) on the Trishaw cycle which is hoped will prove particularly popular with the less mobile visitors.

• This Saturday 18th June it is the launch of Graeme and Hector’s second book of walks around Alrewas. They will be outside the Bank Coffeehouse selling, chatting about and signing the book which has 15 more walks for you to enjoy. There will also be live music with Hector on vocals, Jane Hinks on the hurdy gurdy/melodeon, and Chris Edwards on guitar/fiddle/accordion/concertina/mandola

• The old village cricketing tradition that is the Orme Cup is underway. The Bank play the Hall Stars next Tuesday 21st June at 6.30pm with the semi-finals on Sunday 3rd July at 2pm and 4.30pm. Spectators are very welcome
