Village News 9th September 2021

• Alrewas Civic Society have launched an Alrewas Greening Project, the aim of which is to plant many more trees and bulbs around the village. They would like residents’ opinions and ideas about suitable sites and the village wide consultation began at the Autumn Gathering on Sunday and will continue at the Bank Coffeehouse over the next two weeks. Leaflets and maps will be available showing some proposed locations for planting, and they would welcome your views and any further ideas for sites. They have liased with the Parish Council, Lichfield District Council and Staffordshire County Council regarding land ownership, permission to plant and ongoing maintenance so all is set to begin planting this Autumn.

• The Autumn Gathering last weekend was a huge success with hundreds of people enjoying a condensed but still exceptional Alrewas Show on the Show Field on Saturday and the mini Arts Festival on the Island on Sunday where residents had the opportunity to see the huge amount of effort that has been put into regenerating this piece of scrubland back to the meadow as it was 60 years ago. The Island is now available to the community for organised activities, details can be found on the website

• The newly arrived tortoises at the War Memorial which are plodding their way towards the Alrewas Arts Festival 2022 have been made by Alrewas Crochet Club who also crochet items to brighten up local care homes at special times like Christmas and Easter. Members give most of their work to local charities and good causes and yarn donations are always greatly appreciated. They meet every Tuesday at the Bank Coffeehouse 1.30 to 3.30pm and always welcome new crocheters whether a beginner or experienced.

• The Ladies Cricket Day was also a huge success with The Roses winning the coveted Penny Lawson Trophy and Jude Williamson winning the Great Alrewas Bake Off.

This followed a fantastic day of Cricket the previous week when the Marstons Smooth Trophy Final was held at Walkfield. Chairman Philip Hodgkinson thanked everyone who put so much hard work into organising the day and stated that ‘although the result did not go our way we can be very proud of what was achieved both on and off the pitch, not only yesterday, but throughout the season’.

With just one week to go the Club are still hopeful of both the 1st and 2nd team XIs winning promotion.

Many thanks to Coates’s Butchers for supplying the hog roast which was served up by Alrewas and Fradley Charities and raised just over £500 to donate to good causes in the villages.

• The Alrewas Market is taking place this Sunday 12th September from 11am to 3pm in the Village Hall. There will be a variety of stalls with lots of unique gifts and edible goodies on sale. You could even start some Christmas shopping.

• It is with great regret that a decision has been made not to reopen Pebbles baby and toddler group which has been held every Tuesday morning in the village hall for over 30 years. There is another baby and toddler group operating in Alrewas called Little Fishes, for more information contact the Methodist Church.
